How this Braille translator works

Braille represents writing with cells of up to six raised dots arranged in two columns of three. Dots 1-2-3 run down the left column and 4-5-6 down the right, so the English letter h is dots 1-2-5. This Braille alphabet converter uses Grade 1, or uncontracted Braille: it writes each letter rather than replacing whole words with contractions.

Use it in either direction: enter ordinary text to generate Braille, or paste Braille to read it as text. When converting text to Braille, select the appropriate language for accented letters or Cyrillic. The tool supports English, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese and Turkish. Digits use the number sign (⠼), and the optional capital sign (⠠) preserves upper-case letters.

Everything runs in your browser. The converter is useful for learning the Braille alphabet, checking a short passage, or preparing a Braille-text example; it is not a live Braille interpreter, a speech service, or a replacement for proofreading material intended for embossing.

Choose a Braille format

Choose Unicode Braille to display familiar dot cells such as ⠃⠗, dot numbers to see each cell as its raised-dot positions, or Braille ASCII for a keyboard-friendly representation. In dot-number output, cells are separated by spaces and / represents a word space. The decoder automatically recognizes Unicode cells, dot-number input and Braille ASCII.

For a Braille-to-English conversion, paste a short sample and select English if you need English letters. Because national Braille tables can assign different letters to the same cell, select the matching language whenever the source uses accented or Cyrillic characters.

Grade 1 (uncontracted) spells words out letter by letter, usually with one cell per letter; this is what the tool produces. Grade 2 (contracted) uses contractions and short-forms, such as single cells or signs for common English words and letter groups. This Braille translator focuses on Grade 1 across its eight supported languages.
